British Pound Numbering System

British Pound follows the international numbering system: digits are grouped in threes from the right, separated by commas — thousand (1,000), million (1,000,000), billion (1,000,000,000), and so on. For example, ยฃ1,234,567.00 is written as "One Million Two Hundred Thirty-four Thousand Five Hundred Sixty-seven Pounds Only." This differs from the lakh/crore system used for currencies like the Indian Rupee.

Pounds and Pence in Words

The whole-number part of an amount is spelled out and paired with the major unit — Pound for exactly one, or Pounds otherwise. The decimal part (if any) is converted the same way and paired with the minor unit — Penny for exactly one, or Pence otherwise. This is the same format used on checks and formal documents, including a trailing "Only," which is standard practice to prevent anyone adding extra digits after the written amount.

Watch the singular carefully: it's "One Pound and One Penny" โ€” not "One Pence." Pence is only the plural form; a single unit is always a penny.
